ABOUT THE APPLE SHED

The Apple Shed of today was created in an old packing shed located along a
major railroad line passing through Tehachapi. The packing shed was
originally built, owned and operated by Danish brothers Jacob C. and Rolf
A. Jacobsen. The shed was first built in the late 1930's, burned down
twice and rebuilt each time. It withstood the 1952 Tehachapi earthquake
which destroyed many other downtown buildings. At first the shed was used
to pack and ship potatoes and potato seed. Tons of potatoes were shipped
to the U.S. Navy during World War II. Later, certified Merion bluegrass
seed was packed and shipped to growers all over the world. In the 70's the
shed was sold to the Nunes family who sold local apples here. Open
seasonally until the late 1970's, the building then reverted to ownership
by the railroad.

Today the historic building houses the Apple Shed - a restaurant, bakery
and gift emporium. It is owned and operated by Shirley Fuller, her son
Mike Fuller who also manages the business, and George and Anne Marie
Novinger, niece of the Jacobsen brothers. It was purchased in 1995 and
restored and improved over the next year, opening in August of 1996. Local
apples are sold in season and bring many visitors to the Apple Shed.
Shoppers also like the unusual gifts, art works and hand crafts available.
The fine and carefully selected adult and children's book collection is
very popular. Specialty foods, candies, gifts, and clothing enhance the
shopping selections. Local musicians, artists, and authors are featured as
well as dinner theatre, promoting art and culture in the community. In
addition to full restaurant service, banquets, parties, meetings, dances
and receptions are held from time to time. There is a close view of
passing trains from the deck and windows. Being centrally located, the
Apple Shed also serves as a visitor information and referral center for
orchards, farms, retail stores, and other local attractions in the greater
Tehachapi area.

The vision of the Apple Shed folks is a warm and friendly gathering place
downtown for visitors and for the people of Tehachapi. We hope you have
enjoyed your visit with us and that you will return soon!
