Although the cost of learning to fly varies from pilot to pilot, we have found that the average student will spend roughly $200 per lesson, or $1950 up to their first solo flight. The FAA requires two solo hours and twenty solo flights for a student to be eligible for the Private Pilot Certificate, and the total cost up to that point is approximately $3250 - $3500.
A pilot can add-on a glider rating to an existing power certificate for about $1500 to $1700. The FAA requires ten solo flights to add-on a private rating in gliders, and twenty solo flights for a commercial. The add-on rating meets the requirements of an annual or biennial flight review.
